Curriculum synopsis:
The visual arts curriculum supports the Middle School's academic curriculum and provides instruction and experiential learning in art. The program begins with the premise that each child can enjoy artistic expression and take pride in the work he or she creates. Students learn how to explore self-expression through various forms of media.
Every student in Wilmington Middle School needs to be provided with knowledge, skills, and understanding of art education in a structured and sequential program.
6th Grade:
Exploration in various media and techniques
Many different types of media will be introduced. This year is dedicated to assignments with an emphasis on design. The elements of design will be covered through the use of drawing, painting, construction, lettering, printmaking, art appreciation and art history.
7th Grade:
The Drawing Year
Drawing is taught as a visual language. The classes will learn the elements of a drawing on a two-dimensional surface. Understanding of composition, perspective and the effects of light and shadow to show the illusion of form in basic drawing projects will be studied. The students will explore different media techniques in portraiture, figure drawing, still life, and 1 and 2-point perspective. There will also be discussions regarding art appreciation, history and terminology.
8th Grade:
Mixed Media & Developing Creativity
The focus of this year is more on mixed media and to enhance creativity. Creative thinking strategies will be promoted along with many two and three-dimensional assignments that will offer the students an opportunity to apply new skills and techniques to showcase these new creative thinking skills. Students may be involved in ceramics, painting, drawing and other mixed-media experiences.
